going retro : you know it makes sense

The world seems to be going retro crazy of late: the fashion world is one such sector riddled with throwbacks from an era taste forgot, and seventies style consumables pop up at an increasingly regular rate.

Rather than follow the trend, I ignored the flairs and cardigans, and stepped in an altogether different direction. I drive retro, rather than dress in it.

I own and drive one of Ford's premier flagship models: the ford fiesta. Its of 1979 vintage, and with that 32 years of age has come 32 years of character too.

The driving experience is more raw than that of its newer counterparts; you drive the car, rather than piloting it. Every movement becomes focused rather than intuitive, and the whole vibe is different to the generic hatchbacks of the modern era. Every sensation is fed through your finger tips, your feet, and stimulates the senses.

It has no power steering. Sure, parking is a bit more difficult, but its a sacrifice worth making when a) so little time is actually spent parking, and b) there's no mechanisms hindering the process.

Yes, modern cars can eat up miles like never before and deliver you to your destination as comfortably as a double bed delivers a good nights sleep, but I never did like driving a bed. A car is a mechanical object, not a robot.

So strip back the necessities, slip into some flairs and sit on some vinyl seats. Retro motoring; get in touch with your senses.

Check out the public launch of the Mk1 Fiesta below, and watch out for mean hair and fashion disasters!
